Gemini - The Twins

This morning, Carmen cracked open an egg with twin yolks. This week, she's cracked open 3 like that. During the week, Carmen dreamed repeatedly she was having twins. Gabriel told us he wanted a little brother AND a little sister. Carmen was born under Gemini.

Of course, Carmen's dad had a dream last week that we had quadruplets. Thank goodness I don't believe in omens and signs.

Oh noes.

On Monday, Russia's Novaya Gazeta newspaper reported that part of Ukraine's Soviet-era nuclear arsenal may well have found its way to Iran. With the breakup of the Soviet Union, the Ukrainians agreed to transfer the Soviet nuclear arsenal that remained in Ukraine after its independence to Russia. According to Novaya Gazeta, some 250 nuclear warheads never made it to Russia and are thought to have been sent to Iran instead. The report further noted that the warheads will remain operational until 2010.






While Western defense establishments have had tepid responses to Iran's show of force, the regime built on its provocations Wednesday when the supreme commander of its Revolutionary Guards, Maj.-Gen. Yahya Rahim Safavi, issued a thinly veiled threat to close the Straits of Hormuz - the narrow waterway through which 40 percent of the world's oil passes.

Iran's recent financial maneuverings also indicate general preparations for global war. The Swiss newspaper Der Bund reported the Iranian regime recently withdrew $31 billion of its gold reserves and foreign exchange from European financial institutions. Additionally, this week Iran renewed its gasoline rationing for the general public.

While President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's poisonous and apocalyptic rhetoric has caused the Western world to step away from him, Teheran is far from isolated. To the contrary, today it perceives itself and is perceived by others as the leader of a regional Islamist axis.

In February Canada's Globe and Mail published a report in which Hussein Hajj Hassan, a Hizbullah member of the Lebanese parliament, declared that on January 20 the Islamist axis was formally cemented in Damascus. The parley which brought about the entente was led by Ahmadinejad and attended by axis members Syrian President Bashar Assad, Hizbullah chief Hassan Nasrallah, Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal, Islamic Jihad chief Ramadan Abdullah Shalah and the commanders of PLO breakaway front groups. Iraqi Shi'ite terror chief Muqtada al-Sadr also pledged his allegiance to the axis.

Who's coming to visit?

I'm issuing an open invitation to all friends and family to come stay with us some this summer. We will open the pool when the weather warms up a bit, and leave it up as long as we can.

I am guilty of a parental attrocity

As the carmom readers may be aware, our kids had surgery a couple of days ago. I am officially guilty of my first true parental act of sinister deception.

Most parental deception is harmless or inane (i.e. The S.C. Christmas "miracle"). This one was so bad, Carmom and I knew it was wrong right away.

As we were in the prep room at the hospital, we had both kids together. They had stripped from their clothes into their neat "pajamas". The nurses came with a wagon to get Abby. Abby, being extremely intelligent, knew this was not a good wagon ride. She looked leary, and was not eager to ride. The nurses sensed this immediately and picked her up and carried her to the operating room. She went quietly, but not happily. This was as it should be and caused us no more than the normal amount of "our child is going into surgery" apprehension.

Gabe on the other hand, started saying "I want to ride in the wagon!!!" almost immediately upon Abby leaving. We tried to calm him. We told him his ride would come soon enough. I was already thinking, Uh-Oh, he's in for a serious wake up call on this one. Sure enough, 45 minutes later, the nurses come for Gabe. He's literally jumping up and down with excitement. This is all fun and games and HE gets to ride in the WAGON! He runs out of the room and takes the nurse back to the station to show her the one he wants to ride in. As he's loaded up to be drugged, intubated, have his tonsils sliced out, his adenoids sliced up and his ears tubed, he is smiling from one ear to the other and waving "bye!" back at Mom and I. I walked back into the room repressing shudders of guilt.

When we were in the recovery area with Abby they brought Gabe down. We weren't supposed to see him as he first recovers. According to the nurses, it can be very "distressing" to parents. I heard his moans and shouts. They didn't make sense to anyone else, but I knew what he was saying. "That wasn't the fun wagon ride! You tricked me!"

He's doing better this morning, but he's still grumpy. We're having some difficulty getting him to drink enough, but we're getting him to take some sips. Hopefully, we won't take him in for hydration like some relative of mine had to have after her surgery.

Living up to the Blog's name

I'm stuck. I keep telling myself I've quit blogging. I don't have time, there's too much going on at home/work/whatever.

I'm going to keep posting, but it will be seldom and never... and if I hear of another Blogger deletion with no response/customer service, I will pack it in and find another service.

So, I'm not done... just less frequent. I recommend going to carmom.blogspot.com for the latest and greatest in family news.
