Seldom and Never

The random ruminations of a father of two, who rarely has time to post. (I'm trying, okay, and don't quote Sean Connery to me).

Destination: Charleston

The on-again off-again spur of the moment vacation is on. The destination has moved to Charleston, and the family is actually out the door. This is a 15 hour drive with cranky kids that Carmen is trying on her own. Please pray for her.

I think I have her convinced to spend the night in Knoxville (slightly less than half way), but we'll see. She is very anxious to get to the beach.

The wife's going on vacation

without me. She and the kids have decided to go play with Hurricane Katrina. I'm hoping the hurricane takes a more north or northeasterly track and dodges the Gulf Shores/Pensacola area where they will be staying.

The good news is she rented the crawler at the top before she left. She still hasn't paid, but promises that it's in my best interest to put her message up.

Tour de Lance

In related news, the French are still a bunch of whiny cry-babies. Why can't they accept the fact that Lance won because he had only one testicle? Any guy who looks at those bike seats can say this is the determining factor. Argument 1) Wind Drag. The guy had waaaay less wind drag on the bike. His shorts fit that much tighter, giving him that much less wind resistance. Argument 2) Less pain. With only one testicle, he only endured half the pain of having the scrotum smacked repeatedly throughout the bike races across surrendourland.

Another minor factor in his victory is his use of shark skin technology. Lance had a painful surgery to replace all his skin with shark skin to reduce the amount of drag he experiences. I read it in a French paper, so it must be true.

What a conundrum!

The US Military service academies are trying to "figure out reasons for dramatic drop in applications" as reported in this article by Foxnews.

Does anyone want to point out the inverse correlation between the number of deaths in military action overseas and the number of enrollees and ground beef U?

Don't get me wrong, I support our troops who are doing everything they can to follow the directives they are given from above. I have the highest respect for anyone who is voluntarily serving in our military at a time of strife, especially with the uncertain future where we have set an "invade at will" precedent.

That said, I have no respect for any mid-level government mouthpieces that can't put one and one together to make two because their superiors have told them not to talk about the number two to the media.

The point: get out of these little wars or start taking some oil to justify them. If we're out for the oil, South America would be a bit easier (it's closer, btw!). Tapping ANWAR would cost less lives.

Terrell Owens sucks.

FUTO

This site is funny.

I'm waiting to link an ESPN.com article about TO and Randy Moss getting career ending injuries due to a freak sprinkler accident.

Commissioned

Congrats, SMDH!

Hygiene free BMV!!!

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles has been a relatively pleasant experience in expedient government bureaucracy, a phrase I'd categorize as an oxymoron until this year. We've gone in, done our business and left without incident... until today.

I arrive at the BMV at 11:30, needing only to finalize a title transfer to IN, and obtain plates. The BMV staff had already performed the VIN check and insurance verification. This should have been no problem. At about 12:00, I finally get through the check-in line and take a seat in the waiting area. I have been assigned number 14. I look up at the "now serving" and see 82. This is not a good sign. When I sat down, I sat next to a couple of normal, clean folks. It was my misfortune to find that they were the folks who had been in the building the longest. The girl to my left said she came in at 9:40. Wow. 2.5 hours and she's still here. She was called shortly thereafter. The guy to my right went right after her. Here I am with an empty seat on either side of me, slowly realizing that this was going to be a long wait. It was too late to leave, as I'd already picked up my Tennessee title and all the associated "behind the scenes" paperwork. All I needed was staff assistance.

As I waited, in came the fattest human being alive. He waddled over and partially sat in the chair beside me. Most of him was out in the aisle. I wished I had moved to the end seat at this point, as that would have allowed him to take the two middle seats. Other than his misfortune of being too large for the seat, I took no further notice of the man. Then, he turned and asked me how long I'd been waiting. His breath was like 3 week dead fish gargling meat wash and feces. I almost fell out, but was able to mumble a reply to his query. Thankfully, he didn't breathe in my direction again. Well, maybe he did, but I didn't notice as a perfectly normal person came and sat to my right. It didn't take long for me to realize this was a much worse neighbor. Now, Carmen and I had the misfortune of walking near a smelly guy in the grocery last night, but this guy was rotten! I got up and left the area. So did several others. I was lucky enough to find new seating, and spent the next 3 hours waiting uneventfully.

At 3:30, my name was called. The number sign had gotten stuck on 94, so they switched to calling names. I didn't have to move far, as it was the station nearest to me. I sat down and handed over the paperwork for the lady to review. After every few moments of typing, she would turn to the worker on her left and ask a question like "what do I put here" or "what screen should I use?" I should have known things were not going well. I gave her my credit card to pay. She ran it through and said she needed to get some print outs. She came back from the printer with the Team Leader, who said "you should have checked that box right there. You haven't cashed out have you?" "Yes." "It wasn't credit card was it?" "Yes." "Crap." That is the literal exchange. It turns out they charged my credit card almost $500.00, and they couldn't credit me back. The final bill was only $139.00.

They said I'd get a check in the mail... and they couldn't give me even a ball-park figure of how long it will take.

It was not the best lunch 3.5 hours I've ever spent, but Carmen has Indiana plates now.

I am neglecting my poor, poor blog...

I'll post some pics soon. We've had a lot of goings on with travel lately, so I should have some good ones on the memory stick.

I've enrolled in school for the fall semester, just like the Teacher Guy.

I'm doing more posting/commenting on the other blog I started, Keeping in Touch. If you watch that one, you are likely to get some interesting stories on people from our college days. All we have to do is get James to quit telling us about the weather in Wyoming.

Gabe and Abby are enrolled in Preschool on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a Mothers of Preschoolers program on Wednesdays. Gabe is signed up for story time at the library every Monday, leaving Friday as the only activity free weekday.

I'm getting my passport today, as I've been informed of upcoming trips to San Luis Potosi Mexico and somewhereinthemiddleofstinkingnowhere Brazil.

I'm also getting Carmen's license plate (finally). After this, we're 100% Hoosier, whatever the hell that means.

I hope everyone is well.

Lost in Translation

Greetings from Nashville!

I just got in from dinner... my boss and I came into town, checked into our hotel, and promptly went out to a 3 hour dinner at Ellendales. If you have never eaten there, it is most excellent. It's pricey for dinner, but the lunch is wonderful and reasonable. We met a former Nashvillian coworker as we came into the hotel. He had been to Sonic and was carrying what he thought would be his dinner. While chatting with him, three of the folks we're meeting with for the next two days showed up. The six of us went over and had a good meal. I had some kind of pasta with red sauce topped by a marinated grilled chicken breast stuffed with ham and mushrooms topped again by melted mozzarella. It was most excellent! When the tab came, the out of towners picked up the tab! NO EXPENSE REPORT to file for a dinner that averaged over 20 per plate. Rock.

I got back to the hotel and saw where I missed a call from Carmen. I called her back and realized that it was 11:00 where she is, and hung up. I'll have to call early tomorrow! It looks like we'll be wrapping up earlier than planned on Friday (2:00), so I'll have to wait a bit for Carmen to get here. She's driving from Knoxville to Nashville just to take me back to Knoxville this weekend. My mom is taking the afternoon off to watch the kids, so the soonest Carmen can leave is probably 11:30. That's okay. I'll use the extra time to visit with some former cohorts here at the Nashvegas office.

I love you, Carmen! I'm sorry I missed your call! Please give the kids big hugs and kisses from me!

My son just drove off...

with Carmen's mom n' sister. I am very sad. Gabriel always made me feel good. Every night without fail, he would demand his hug and kiss from me before he would go to bed. Whenever I'm sitting on the couch, he will come up and snuggle in next to me to watch.

He really makes me feel needed as more than just a wallet, and I'm going to miss that for the next week or so.

Story Time, in honor of Seth

Since Seth was kind enough to bring up me getting whupped by a guy who shortly thereafter beat the hell out of his girlfriend, I'll tell a story I remember about him.

Seth was a wrestler in high school. He liked to wear tights and roll around on the floor with other boys. I never really questioned him on this... kinda like "don't ask, don't tell."

In order to participate on the team, he had to get a physical. Now, Seth decided that he would procrastinate and get his at the last minute. The last minute ended up being halloween. To make a long story short, Seth had a woman in a clown outfit grab his nuts and tell him "turn your head and cough."

Seth, how were you feeling at that moment?

My sweet new ride...

I preordered my new car. I may buy one for Carmen, too. Do you think Gabe would want one?
